Avoid bad habits

Although running is a simple enough task, there are a lot of bad habits it is very easy to fall into, especially if you run by yourself. One of the more common is giving up for the day soon after you’ve started, because you’re not feeling ‘up for it’. This may of course be reasonable (it’s always better to stop and come back stronger the next day) but five minutes of stretching before a session gets the muscles firing and ready to go. Doing this can make you feel a lot better during the actual run. Another easy mistake is to slowly stop pushing yourself – often by avoiding hills. It’s been mentioned a couple of times already, but that’s because it’s so important – keep changing your running route and you’ll keep seeing progress. So next time you pass that steep-looking hill, give it a go! It is also very important to address aches and pains. Many first-time runners can get these and assume it’s natural after a run. While muscular soreness should be expected, any sore joints should be checked out straight away. It might be the result of unsupportive footwear or improper technique.
